MIC Announces Five Key Trends Observed at CES 2024

Trend One: AI PCs Surpass Traditional PCs, Becoming Vital Partners for Humans in Self-Enhancement

MIC notes that AI took the spotlight at CES 2024, with particular attention on artificial intelligence (AI) PCs, targeting devices capable of executing generative AI functions offline. According to our industry analyst Yi-Ling Chen, the new generation of personal computers not only features powerful AI technology but also provides superior audio modulation, advanced assistant functions for calls and video, coupled with high-definition Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) screens. These groundbreaking computers redefine the value proposition, surpassing traditional PCs, and play a more crucial role in various aspects of life, including work, entertainment, and learning, becoming indispensable partners for humans in self-enhancement.

Trend Two: Generative AI Enhances Intuitive and Lifestyle Applications in Electric Vehicle (EV) Interiors

Generative AI is revolutionizing the development of EVs. At CES 2024, Volkswagen declared itself the first carmaker to mass produce EVs equipped with ChatGPT as standard across its entire fleet, while Mercedes-Benz unveiled the Concept CLA Class car, offering more intuitive and lifestyle-oriented suggestions than traditional automotive voice assistants. Senior industry analyst Lucy Ho indicates that many automakers are integrating generative AI under the guise of testing. The focus is on enhancing the intuitiveness of in-car voice interfaces, emphasizing meaningful and safety-conscious voice assistance for drivers, prompting automakers to train generative AI with a "restricted and specific" scope.

Trend Three: Shift in EV Industry Focus from Concept Marketing to Practical Technical Applications

According to Ho, the EV industry is transitioning from a concept marketing model to practical technical applications. This shift is particularly evident in three areas: software-defined vehicles at automakers, the expansion of new energy sources in the EV realm, and the adoption of advanced process chips in automotive applications. Major communication IC manufacturers are swiftly integrating technologies with high computation, high integration, and built-in AI into the next-generation computing architecture for EVs, leading to a faster-than-expected impact on the convergence of information and communication technology with the automotive sector.

MIC observes a reduction in the number of automotive exhibitors at CES 2024, especially a significant decrease in the quantity of concept/production EVs. Ho explains that EVs are moving from policy-supported development towards market acceptance, challenging the speed of product development in the EV industry regarding whether actual production and development can generate equivalent revenue.

Trend Four: Generative AI Innovates and Automates Elements in Digital Health

AI continues to make its forays into the digital health sector, making health-related applications more personalized and precise for users. Analyzing the developments in digital health applications at CES 2024, MIC states that AI has transitioned from concept to practical use, including the creation of generative AI. Progress is noted in areas such as dietary management, mental health, sleep management, and elderly care. Senior industry analyst Mandy Wang emphasizes that generative AI will bring more innovation and automation to digital health in the future. However, addressing privacy concerns and strengthening trust mechanisms is crucial, and under these conditions, AI can achieve the vision of inclusive digital health.

Mandy notes that the trend of the "home" becoming the new starting point for digital health is emerging. CES 2024 showcases numerous wearable devices, IoT devices, and home environment interconnections, including smart home applications for elderly care scenarios and innovative home detection devices applicable in remote healthcare. The open-source standard Matter for smart homes further supports the development of this trend.

Trend Five: ESG Drives Opportunities for Energy-Efficient ePaper and Reflective LCD

Addressing the development of display technology and products, MIC points out that several companies are launching new technologies and applications for ePaper and reflective LCD to meet the energy consumption limitations imposed by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) requirements. These technologies, coupled with renewable energy solutions, find applications in various fields such as healthcare, retail, and transportation. Senior industry analyst David Chen states that as display technologies and innovative applications that meet energy-saving and carbon reduction requirements continue to develop, they will drive the upgrade and transformation of the display industry.

Chen highlights that compared to CES 2023, CES 2024 exhibits feature increased resolution up to 16K, brightness increased to 5,000 nits, and expanded sizes up to 163 inches. These advancements not only break the limitations of traditional display technologies but also create new opportunities for future high-end emerging application products, providing better visual interactive experiences and business opportunities for home entertainment, professional applications, smart cockpits, and the metaverse.
